Mr. Kevin Smith
WP6 Coordinator
"WP6 implements the Integrated Action Plans in each field site; carry out participatory monitoring of ecosystem services, functions and resources; evaluates constraints to and benefits from integrated action plans activities; and institutionalizes strategies."

- Based on WP3 outcomes the ecological basis to Integrated Action Plans (IAPs) formulated in WP3, WP4 and WP5, respectively will be reviewed with stakeholders and probable impacts explored
- Approaches to implementing, monitoring and evaluating IAP activities negotiated and agreed with local stakeholders at each study site
- Participatory monitoring programme, involving local stakeholders, established based on ecosystem indicators from WP3
- Change in ecosystem services and biodiversity values resulting from intervention assessed against indicators and evaluated
- Outcomes of IAP activities assessed in consultation with local stakeholders and suitable adaptations to enhance outcomes and uptake by other communities in the region identified
The results from WP3 including maps, GIS images and indicators of ecosystem services and biodiversity will be used in conjunction with the results from WP4&5 to explore strategies proposed in the IAPs to promote conservation of highland aquatic resources at four sites in consultation with all stakeholders (i.e. local communities, NGOs, local and national government, research institutions) and negotiate access and their full participation. Particular highland aquatic ecosystem services, biodiversity hotspots or areas that require protection will be identified with the local community and all other stakeholders. Pilot studies will be carried out in some villages, possible suggestions could be: rehabilitate highland aquatic ecosystem areas that constitute important nursery habitats or spawning sites; interventions to monitor and prevent habitat destruction and illegal use activities; designation of closed seasons or protected areas; community-based management; watershed conservation measures, notably soil conservation and management. Based on agreed protocols developed with stakeholders, participatory monitoring of ecosystem services, functions and resources using the simple indicators identified in WP3 will be carried out by the local communities and research institutes and national stakeholders in conjunction with the project partners. At the final stakeholder workshop at each study site there will be a summary of findings to assess constraints to, and benefits from preliminary implementation of IAP activities; refinements will be proposed; strategies to promote the institutionalisation of the action planning process and IAP activities beyond the completion of the project developed and appropriate contributions to a toolkit of research approaches and Better Management Practices (D2.2) made.
Workpackage outputs will be integrated in D7.1, D8.1 and D2.2 to ensure consistency and interdisciplinary outputs with greater potential to pomote biodiversity conservation and wise-use of highland aquatic resources
